I put my xD-Picture Card into my computer and when I try to open the camera and says I must format it before you use them. I fear that if the format of all my photos that have been lost. How do I get pictures from the xD card on my computer? Thank you.

You should be able to directly connect the camera to your computer. No picture or pictures are lost.
uses the camera to take pictures and stored in the miniSD card, you should have a USB out. Use a USB cable (mini-) cable to connect the camera to your computer. If your computer does not recognize the camera, then go to the manufacturer's website to download and install the software for your specific camera.
